As a construction contractor specialising in structural remedial works, we had cause to use Dr Hill’s services to prepare a structural report for our end client (Yorkshire Housing), on a property which was part of their housing stock.

The property in question was showing signs of cracking both internally and externally.  We were already in receipt of a Building Surveyor report which had been forwarded to Yorkshire Housing, but they felt it necessary to obtain a more detailed structural report to analyse the integrity of the property and to also propose a remedial scheme which was structurally sufficient and cost effective to remedy the problem on a long term basis.

Such a report was required from a qualified Structural Engineer and after receipt of several quotes we went with Dr Hill due to the prompt and efficient manner in which our initial enquiry was answered.  This open approach continued throughout, with regular contact being kept and the whole process from inspection to report being completed within a few days.  Technical knowledge aside, it was a pleasure to deal with Dr Hill and his team from start to finish due to the professional and polite manner with which all correspondence were dealt.

The report itself was as expected very detailed, and offered a technical insight into the causes and also a great knowledge of the practicality of the proposed remedial applications that is not always prevalent in such documents.  This biggest compliment we can pay is to say that for any future structural reports we require we will go direct to Dr. Hill and his team, and will not be obtaining any comparative quotations.

I had cause to use Dr Hill's services in 2012 when I needed a structural engineer's input for a substantial 2 storey extension to my home. His costs were in line with other quotes I had received, but I took a chance on him based on the references I had seen.

His initial report was frankly too detailed and technical for me so I could not assess how good it was, although it concluded that all would be fine.  However, once building work had started, the inspectors from the council considered the existing foundations, and what they were built upon, to be inadequate for the load they would have to carry, and recommended underpinning to the tune of £40,000, which would have been too much for me.

Dr Hill disagreed with them and argued his case vociferously insisting that from his extensive experience there was no issue. His confidence and experience led the inspectors to take his arguments seriously and they requested another report from him with further calculations showing that the additional load would be supported by the existing foundations. It also emerged that my property was built upon a concrete raft, and this together with his report meant that all could proceed as planned without additional cost.

I was particularly impressed by Dr Hill when I witnessed him arguing his case with the inspectors - not many others would have done so. I am convinced that his knowledge, experience and strong convictions, have saved me considerable expense. He is highly professional and supportive of his clients.

In my long working career I have found that there are three main areas that people may be assessed at work: ethics, competence and commitment. From what I have seen of Dr Hill, he seems to pass all three. I shall be recommending him to others.

"Many thanks for your structural report on our property. Buying a neglected
200-year old property was an overwhelming prospect, but your understandable,
no-nonsense, advice was invaluable to us. The report was comprehensive and
clear, backed up by photographic evidence and excellent advice on what to
do in each room. We also found it very useful that the report included a
list of essential/advisable repairs with estimated costs for each or them.
We appreciated your availability to answer our questions after the survey
was handed over to us. It all contributed to a very professional and
personalised service. At last, a property survey worth its money!

"I was very impressed with Dr Hill's services - I needed an
urgent building and structural survey which he was able to
organise within a few days - a few days after visiting the
property he e-mailed the survey report to me - his report was
extremely comprehensive including photographs and really clear
written detail - this survey report provided a true appraisal
of the property, giving me confidence to proceed with the
purchase - I would definitely use Dr Hill again."

Feedback 5

"We required the services of Dr David Hill back in November, we asked him to attend a property we were looking at purchasing but with it being an old property we were unsure of its condition, Mr Hill was very prompt he attended that same week, and the feedback we received was extremely thorough and professional so much so that we decided what he had found was going to cost us too much to put right, so we decided to pull out of the purchase, which saved us a lot of money in the future.

I would certainly recommend his services.

To whom it may concern.

We chose Dr David Hill from the local surveyors website, and we are so pleased we did. The property to be surveyed was an 1800's cottage and we were concerned about one or two things. Dr. Hill carried out the survey within the agreed time scale and a concise report followed promptly. The report was clear and easily understood with photographs. Dr. Hill explained the issues relating to buildings of this age in layman terms and gave appropriate advice and estimated cost of remedial work. There was a couple of queries which arose at a later date and Dr. Hill was very helpful in giving advice on these issues. We would highly recommend Dr. Hill to anyone wanting a building survey.

"I retained Dr Hill in late 2011 for a large basement conversion that ran for over 8 months, and included underpinning and large internal steel supports.  Dr Hill's advice was invaluable. His pro-active forward

thinking approach not only highlighted issues we had not considered

but he was able to offer solutions that were more cost affective.

The quality and clarity of his reports meant the contractors were

able to get on with the job quickly and accurately saving me time

and money."

Dr David Hill was one of two Building Surveyors recommended to us by our Solicitors when we were considering purchasing our bungalow. We were so impressed by David's pleasant yet professional manner even on the telephone that we immediately decided to use his services without recourse to the other recommended Surveyor. David undertook the survey promptly, efficiently and most professionally. His subsequent report to us was most comprehensive being reinforced by first class photography of every aspect of his investigation.

We raised a good number queries with him on various points of his report and he dealt with these fully, courteously and most patiently, advising us as to what remedial work was necessary and how it should be undertaken. His great range of knowledge and qualifications relating to every aspect of building and construction was very reassuring to us thus enabling us to feel confident that we were armed with a full and correct appraisal of the property we were

contemplating buying. We will not hesitate to use his services again if the need arises nor will we hesitate to recommend him to any person, company or organisation.

The recommendation came from Helen Atkinson of Jordans Solicitors of Wellington Road, Dewsbury (01924 457171).
She too is one of life's genuine people and a pleasure to deal with.

We got in touch with Dr David Hill after consulting a
number of other structural engineers.  We have found
Dr Hill to be a blessing is disguise as without his
knowledge and experience we would have struggled to
get our project completed at the Mosque.  Dr Hill's
design for the Mosque extension has received much
praise from within the community and he will
definitely be our first point of call for any future
works.  He is extremely friendly and approachable
and it has been a pleasure working with him.

The 'Practice' was started in 1987 by Dr David Stuart Hill MSc(Eng), MBA, PhD, DSc(Hon), an architectural-engineering building designer, chartered surveyor and corporate project manager. Dr. Hill is the practice's principal and where he has an in-depth knowledge of a very broad array of construction disciplines. This brings to the practice and its clients unequalled integrated wisdom and advice based upon over 4 decades of hands-on experience. Indeed prior to setting up the practice he has held senior positions within the building industry and even heading up a small construction group. This extensive knowledge has been gained in both design aspects and practical hands-on applications for over a 44-year period. This combination of invaluable site experience together with leading design knowledge has been highly beneficial for our clients over the years. In this respect instead of the client appointing an array of professionals at a very high cost, they simply appoint one professional.

The 'Practice' now offers, where required, a holistic integrated approach from client conceptions to successful completion of a building project and building maintenance thereafter.

But added to this the 'Practice' provides at highly competitive prices, individual services for

  • architectural design drawings for local authority approval
  • civil and structural engineering design calculations for local authority approval - from single beams to complete frames
  • building and structural reports required by financial institutions and clients
  • party wall surveying
  • financial budget costings before you start so you know where you stand
  • eco-Design and architecture
  • environmental studies and site investigation for reused land
  • insurance claims - subsidence and damage
  • expert witness work for Court proceedings
  • programming so that your project finishes on time
  • project management
  • quantity surveying duties.

We pride ourselves in that we can undertake cost-effective services for our many clients if it is a house extension or a larger project. Indeed, house extensions and their requirements are the basis of our Practice's work.

Therefore if you have a house extension that you wish to build or a larger commercial or industrial project, contact our office for peace-of-mind and satisfaction from the very start.

Client Satisfaction

With 22-years as client advisers, architectural designers, civil & structural engineering designers, construction accountants and project managers, we are fully aware that the most important factors for the client are trust in their designers, a project's value-for-money, the selection of competent builders and a high quality of workmanship. With our considerable hands-on experience, we guarantee these four elements for all clients.

In this respect and with over two decades of practice knowledge and experience, we are fully aware that there is consistently poor workmanship undertaken within the industry and what has been describe in the press and on TV as 'cowboy' building. In this respect, recent 2012 analysis in the UK by the industry trade bodies, has determined that there are now approximately 11% of builders who can be classified as 'cowboys'. Ten years ago there was estimated to be 6%. Therefore the number of cowboy builders has over doubled within a mere 10 years. Unfortunately for building clients, we have been called in many times over the years to solve poor workmanship projects that have gone horribly wrong.

Using our services there is no way that this becomes a nightmare for the client as all our recommended builders have been fully vetted for over a 10-year period - the beauty of our long-term knowledge and experience base and why our clients have complete security from day-one.
